How to Choose the Right Plants for your Apartment

There are plants on a desk in an office room. Don’t just grab any pretty flower when choosing the right indoor plant for your apartment. The growth, maintenance, and lighting needs all factor into whether or not a plant will work well in your apartment. Make sure to select the best type for your situation. Keep reading to learn more about the characteristics of plants that are right for an apartment and a few suggestions of the best plants for you to pick up.

Common Traits of Plants Suited to Apartment Life

Apartments offer a range of options that a house doesn’t have. Indoor plants can help you capitalize on your space and bring the best to your home decor while making the air fresh.

Look for low-maintenance plants - the less watering and fertilizing, let alone any other care, the better. Successful plants will bounce back after some time without watering when more delicate plants would have died. Apartment plants live long lives without dropping leaves often. Their scent is subtle if noticeable at all. They typically need little light. And a good apartment plant will stand out!

Best Plants to Get for Your Apartment

Knowing the traits is important. Here are some plants that fit our advice:

  1. Herbs: Don’t choose pretty flowers when you can have a working plant! Herbs are great at keeping away insects while adding a lovely, subtle scent to the room. Plus, they can be plucked and added to dishes you cook, providing the freshest flavor without the need for a specialty grocery store. Select basil, rosemary, and thyme for south/west-facing windows or mint and parsley for east/north-facing windows.
  2. Cacti: Many plants need humid, almost rainforest-like conditions to thrive and be happy. The cactus is a different kind of plant. They will need at least three hours of sun per day, but as long as the apartment remains room temperature, they are happy. Many cactus plants will also bloom in brilliant colors. Make sure only to water them lightly and allow for their soil to drain.
  3. Zebra Plant: This small plant tops out at 8 inches high and is popular with people in apartments. Zebra Plants stand out for their zebra-like pattern. Choose this plant for its easy maintenance and low light tolerance. The thick leaves look like tentacles and can easily grow into separate plants that you can repot. Make sure to dry out the soil of these plants between watering to prevent any mold from growing. Zebra Plants work great on kitchen tables, shelves, or even in the bathroom.
