The Essentials for Bringing a Dog to an Apartment

Having an animal in a tight space can prove difficult. This tight space can be made more difficult by having a dog, depending on whether on not you got a breed that usually does well in apartments.

So long as you have the furry friend that is well-suited for the limited space of an apartment, there are a few pointers that will help you two (or more!) prepare for your new home. Read on to get the must-have pointers before you move in.

Tip #1: Vaccinations and Other Shots

Make sure to keep up with your doggie’s vaccinations and other shots (in general, but more importantly) before you move into your apartment. Many apartments require proof of your pet's current immunities as part of the agreement. This situation jumps up in severity if your dog happens to bite someone else.

With misbehaving dogs in mind, let's check out how to help them in our next point.

Tip #2: Get Ready to Train

With being a good neighbor, consider the volume and frequency of your dog’s barking. Consider talking training classes or a citronella collar.

Aside from others, consider your own space. Most obviously, you will want to make sure the dog knows where to go for business time. Additionally, you may want to set aside play areas and “off limits” areas to maintain the carpeting or hardwood flooring.

Tip #3: Desensitize

There can be a lot going on in apartment complexes and the surrounding area. Your dog may not be familiar with the excess cars, people, noises, and activity that go with apartment life. Try introducing some of these potential stressors into their life slowly in a safe environment.

Tip #4: Consider the First Floor

Unless you are looking to work on your stair-climbing routine, consider being on the ground floor. Especially as your pup gets up there in years, you will thank yourself during those late nights or early morning runs to the grass.

Tip #5: Set up Daily Dog Routines

Depending on your work schedule, you may need to get your dog’s bathroom schedule synced up with your availability. If you work long days, coming home right away will probably be necessary. If you work over 10 consecutive hours, consider getting a dog walker to come by during the day to relieve your doggie from hopping from paw to paw.
